We’re sharing important fire safety advice to keep you safe in your home.

From Monday 21 September to Friday 25 September, we’re supporting Fire Door Safety Week and sharing other important fire safety advice to help keep you safe. Keep reading for information on keeping fire doors closed, planning escape routes, reporting damaged fire doors, and how to reduce the risk of a chimney fire.

Keep fire doors closed

It’s important to make sure fire doors are closed, as they can help slow the spread of fire and smoke, giving you more time to escape safely. Please don’t prop fire doors open, as this can put you, your family, and your neighbours at risk. Every second counts in an emergency, and a closed fire door can make an important difference.

Prepare your escape routes

It’s important to have a plan in case there’s a fire in your home. Follow our top tips:

  • Have an escape route planned from every room.

  • Make sure everyone in your home knows how to get out in the event of a fire.

  • Keep routes to doors and windows clear so you can get out quickly and safely.

Report damaged fire doors

Fire doors help keep you safe, so it’s important to look out for any signs of damage. Damage to the door, frame, hinges, or seals can prevent a fire door from working as it should. If something doesn’t look right, please call our Repairs Hotline on 01226 787878.

Reducing the risk of a chimney fire

If you have a chimney or use a solid-fuel appliance in your home, there are simple steps you can take to help reduce the risk of a chimney fire. Follow these tips to stay safe:

  • Use appliances safely and follow the manufacturer’s guide.

  • Choose good-quality fuel that is suitable for your appliance.

  • Arrange regular chimney sweeping and appliance maintenance with qualified professionals.
