A summer of volunteering

We've been out and about across the borough, supporting our independent living schemes and Barnsley Hospice, our chosen charity for 2026-27.

Throughout July, over 30 colleagues put their gardening skills to good use during a series of ‘Can Do Crew’ volunteering days at our independent living schemes. They helped to tidy up communal outdoor spaces, creating welcoming environments for everyone to enjoy. In total, colleagues completed 15 volunteering hours at Glebe Court, Churchfields Close and Heather Court, helping to refresh outdoor spaces for the summer months.

Can Do Crew is our company-wide initiative, giving colleagues paid time off to support local charities, community groups and tenants across Barnsley. It provides opportunities to make a positive difference in the community while developing new skills and building connections with residents.

We also supported our chosen charity for 2026-27 by delivering 300 leaflets in Ardsley to encourage donations to Barnsley Hospice Retail Hub. While colleagues were still out posting leaflets, the Retail Hub had already started receiving calls from people wanting to donate, demonstrating how a few hours of volunteering can make a real difference.

Steve Feast, Chief Executive, said: "Volunteering is a great way for us to demonstrate our commitment to creating great communities across Barnsley. As well as supporting our chosen charity for 2026-27, colleagues can meet new people, develop new skills and make a positive difference to the lives of residents across the borough. I'm proud of the enthusiasm our colleagues continue to show in giving back to local communities."
