Celebrating 40 years of Churchfields Close

Berneslai Homes celebrated the 40th anniversary of Churchfields Close on Wednesday 1 July, an independent living scheme based in Barnsley Town Centre.

The event marked four decades of Churchfields Close providing a welcoming and supportive space for residents.

Colleagues and tenants celebrated the milestone by reminiscing and exploring the scheme's wonderful history, through a collection of historic photos and newspaper clippings provided by Barnsley Archives. The Community Engagement team also joined us to share information about their Community Champions network and ways to get involved.

Churchfields Close offers self-contained flats, alongside shared facilities, such as a communal lounge, kitchen, and a laundry room to help residents stay independent with a bit of support.

There are weekly activities such as bingo, coffee mornings, and quizzes to help reduce feelings of loneliness and combat social isolation.

Dave Fullen, Executive Director of Customer and Estate Services, said: “It was great to mark 40 years of Churchfields Close in a wonderful way. We're proud to see that the scheme still offers a welcoming space for residents to reminisce, socialise, and connect with each other.  We would like to thank everyone who joined us and our Community Buildings team who organised the event."
